Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhaes shared his excitement on social media following his team’s contentious 2-1 victory over North London rivals Tottenham on Wednesday, January 15.
The 27-year-old played a pivotal role for Mikel Arteta’s side, who narrowed the gap to Premier League leaders Liverpool to just four points.
Tottenham captain Heung-Min Son opened the scoring in the 25th minute when his deflected volley beat Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya. However, the match’s most controversial moment came in the 40th minute when Leandro Trossard’s cross deflected off Pedro Porro and back onto the Belgian, but instead of awarding Spurs a goal kick, Arsenal were given a corner.
From the resulting corner, Gabriel rose above the Tottenham defense to meet Declan Rice’s delivery, though the final touch was deemed to come off Spurs forward Dominic Solanke, resulting in an own goal.
Trossard secured the win with a decisive strike just before halftime, boosting Arsenal’s pursuit of the Premier League title.
Gabriel, who has been instrumental for Arsenal this season with five goals and one assist in 26 starts across all competitions, celebrated the victory on Instagram with the message: “LONDON IS RED.”
The win closes the gap on Liverpool, who were held to a 1-1 draw by Nottingham Forest, though Liverpool still have a game in hand. Arsenal’s next test is against Aston Villa on Saturday, January 18, as they aim to continue their title challenge.
Meanwhile, Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou criticized Arsenal after the controversial incident during the match.
