Gabriel Jesus ended his 11-month wait for a Premier League goal and told Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta that he’s ready for more.
After scoring a hat-trick in the Carabao Cup against Crystal Palace midweek, the Arsenal No.9 netted twice against the same team in a 5-1 victory at Selhurst Park on Saturday. Jesus scored his first Premier League goal since January just six minutes into the match and added another before halftime.
The former Manchester City striker’s brace means he has scored five goals in two games, having previously taken 45 matches to reach that tally. With a smile on his face, he commented post-match, “I’m very happy with the goals as a number nine. I know the pressure to score is always there, but I’m happy, and the win, the three points, was massive today.”
“I’m the type of person who wants to work hard. I know my qualities, and I know I can score. In my mind, I know I can score—I just need to position myself well to finish, like I did today. I scored two and missed one that I’ll be dreaming of.”
Kai Havertz has often led Arsenal’s attack this season, with Arteta preferring him as the focal point. However, Jesus, a Premier League title winner, is versatile and offers something different to Arsenal’s attack. After battling back from injuries, he is now eager for more chances as they challenge Liverpool in the title race.
“When I play with a smile on my face, everything changes,” he added. “I’m trying to stay mentally strong and just help the team. I know I need to be in the box more to finish chances.”
“It’s great to be back in the team, playing more regularly. I’m experienced enough to know that constant playing makes a difference. I’m happy with the chances I’m getting, but it’s up to me to position myself to score.”
