Mo Salah is reportedly close to signing a new contract that will break FSG’s long-standing policy at Liverpool.
The Egyptian forward, a frontrunner for the PFA Player of the Year and a top Ballon d’Or contender after an impressive 32 goals and 22 assists, is out of contract this summer, making his future a major talking point this season.
Back in November, Salah unsettled Liverpool fans when, after a win against Southampton, he revealed he had not “received any offers yet to stay at the club” and admitted he was “probably more out than in.”
However, while Trent Alexander-Arnold is nearing a move to Real Madrid, Salah appears set to extend his eight-year tenure at Anfield.
On Wednesday, several Liverpool reporters broke major news, with Paul Joyce of The Times claiming Salah is on the verge of signing a contract extension with the Premier League leaders.
Fabrizio Romano confirmed that negotiations had progressed positively, stating that an agreement was in the “final stages.” Lewis Steele of The Daily Mail added that while contract length details remain unclear, sources suggest a two-year extension is the most likely outcome.
This deal would defy Fenway Sports Group’s usual policy of not offering contract extensions to players over 30. However, Salah, still performing at a high level at 32, appears to be an exception.
Similarly, Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk, who turns 34 in July, is expected to stay at the club after positive developments in his contract talks.
Such moves mark a departure from Liverpool’s previous stance on aging players, a policy introduced by former sporting director Michael Edwards during his tenure from 2016 to 2022. Now, after a spell at Bournemouth, Edwards has returned to FSG as chief executive of football.
Following Liverpool’s 3-2 loss to Fulham, Van Dijk was asked about his contract situation and confirmed “there is progress, yeah.” When pressed on whether he would stay, he replied, “I don’t know, we’ll see.”
Liverpool will return to action on Sunday against West Ham at Anfield, looking to bounce back with a win that would push them closer to the title.
