Footage of Trent Alexander-Arnold arriving for Liverpool’s Carabao Cup loss to Tottenham has surfaced, leaving fans concerned.
The 26-year-old’s future remains a hot topic, with Real Madrid making every effort to secure his signature. The Spanish club’s attempt to sign the Liverpool vice-captain in January was swiftly rejected, and the club now faces the possibility of losing one of its most valuable assets for free in the summer.
Currently, Alexander-Arnold is eligible to negotiate a pre-contract with foreign clubs, though reports suggest his representatives have not yet initiated talks with Madrid. Staying at Anfield is still a possibility.
The right-back’s performance during the 2-2 draw with Manchester United in the Premier League had already frustrated fans, who are eager to see him commit to a long-term future at Liverpool.
Alexander-Arnold was left out of the starting lineup for the trip to Spurs, with Conor Bradley filling in. However, Bradley couldn’t prevent Liverpool from losing 1-0 due to a controversial Lucas Bergvall goal, marking manager Arne Slot’s second defeat since replacing Jurgen Klopp.
The footage of Alexander-Arnold arriving at the stadium has sparked further concern. In the clip, a fan can be heard reassuring him that supporters are “still behind him” and advising him to “keep his head up,” but the player does not respond.
On social media, reactions were mixed. One fan, @Irishlfc57, wrote: “He doesn’t even acknowledge them.” Another, @SRipper9, expressed worry about his attitude, stating: “Completely ignores the fans! He worries me, his attitude seems very off lately, as does his body language…” @JamesGerrard added, “Blanked, I noticed he’s stopped clapping the fans when he walks over for corners at Anfield, too. Something he’s always done.”
However, some speculated that Alexander-Arnold may not have heard the fans. @johnpeat suggested, “Defo got AirPods in and can hear nothing.”
Alexander-Arnold may return to action when Liverpool faces Accrington Stanley in the FA Cup on Saturday. Manager Arne Slot, after the draw against United, insisted that the England international is focused on the current season and not on speculation regarding his future with Real Madrid.
He said: “What I do know this season, all the points and all the results we got are deserved. All the players are fit at the moment, but if we drop points when we have injuries, people say it is because you have injuries. If we drop points when Mo misses a penalty against (Real) Madrid, he is distracted by his contract situation. If Trent hasn’t had his best performance, he is distracted by the contract situation. If they play really well, nobody tells me, ‘That’s because they have a contract situation.’ We always try to find arguments, but nine out of 10 times, the best argument is the quality of the team you face or the game-plan the other team has.”
