Ademola Lookman’s transfer request may benefit Liverpool as they explore options to offload Italian winger Federico Chiesa.
The 27-year-old Chiesa has been the subject of transfer speculation following a busy summer for Liverpool, during which the club brought in high-profile players like Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike.
While many would assume that Lookman’s decision to request a transfer from Atalanta—having previously played for Everton, Leicester, and Fulham—would have little bearing on Chiesa’s future, the situation might be more connected than it seems. Atalanta is reportedly interested in acquiring Chiesa, and Lookman’s potential departure could open both a roster spot and financial room for the deal to go through.
In his statement, Lookman said:
> “I’ve cherished my time in Bergamo, but after three incredible years, I feel ready for a new chapter. Though I’ve stayed loyal through previous interest from other clubs, the club and I had agreed that if the right offer came, they’d allow me to move.
Unfortunately, despite receiving such an offer, the club is now preventing the move for reasons I don’t understand. After months of unmet promises and what I feel has been unfair treatment both personally and professionally, I believe I must speak out. I have now formally submitted a transfer request.”
If Lookman secures a move away from Atalanta this summer, it could create the ideal conditions for the Italian club to pursue Chiesa.
Liverpool, under new manager Arne Slot, have already strengthened their squad significantly with the additions of Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez, Giorgi Mamardashvili, Armin Pecsi, Freddie Woodman, and Will Wright.
The transfer window remains open, and media reports suggest Liverpool are also eyeing Newcastle striker Alexander Isak.
As for Chiesa, his adaptation to Premier League football has been challenging—he managed just two goals and two assists in 14 appearances last season.
