Fans have humorously suggested that Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk showed ultimate disrespect to a Tottenham player during their Carabao Cup semi-final clash.
Spurs entered the second leg at Anfield with a 1-0 advantage, thanks to Lucas Bergvall’s late goal in the first match. They defended resolutely in the opening 30 minutes, with new loan signing Kevin Danso making an impact on his debut.
Liverpool momentarily thought they had equalized when Dominic Szoboszlai found the net, but his goal was ruled out for offside. However, Cody Gakpo did level the tie in the 34th minute with a well-placed finish into the bottom left corner.
Earlier in the match, fans noticed an amusing incident involving Van Dijk and Spurs forward Richarlison. After winning a foul in his own half, Richarlison sat on the ground and looked up to see Van Dijk extending a hand to help him up. But just as the Brazilian accepted the gesture, Van Dijk pulled his hand away at the last moment and walked off, leaving Richarlison briefly puzzled.
Richarlison’s night worsened before halftime when he suffered an injury and had to be substituted for debutant Mathys Tel.
Liverpool extended their lead in the second half when Darwin Núñez was fouled by Spurs goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky, allowing Mo Salah to confidently convert the resulting penalty.
The winner of the tie will meet Newcastle in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley on March 16. Newcastle secured their place by defeating Arsenal 2-0 at St James’ Park, sealing a 4-0 aggregate victory with goals from Jacob Murphy and Anthony Gordon.
