Fans are convinced that Declan Rice deliberately stopped himself from saying something during his post-match interview.
After netting two brilliant free kicks against Real Madrid last week at the Emirates, Rice once again stole the spotlight as Arsenal eliminated Los Blancos from the Champions League.
The Gunners claimed a 2-1 victory on the night, securing a place in the semi-finals with a dominant 5-1 win on aggregate.
Next up, Mikel Arteta’s side will face off against French heavyweights Paris Saint-Germain.
Speaking after the match, Rice said: “We now have to go to Ipswich on Sunday which is going to be a tough game because we want to secure that, keep going and keep winning matches in the Premier League and also focus on this competition.”
Fans on social media quickly picked up on the pause in his sentence and speculated that Rice was about to say something he wasn’t supposed to.
One fan commented: “Rice had to stop himself from saying ‘we have to secure that 2nd place in the Prem.’”
Another added: “He was definitely about to say second place.”
A third chimed in: “Rice nearly slipped up—‘go to Ipswich and secure that…’ Yeah, second place is what you meant!”
Someone else echoed: “He almost said ‘secure second in the league.’”
After finishing runners-up to Manchester City in consecutive seasons, Arsenal were considered strong contenders to finally clinch the Premier League title this year.
With City experiencing a significant dip in form, it seemed like Arteta’s men had a real shot at glory.
However, Liverpool under Arne Slot now appear favorites for the title, needing just six more points to seal their 20th top-flight crown.
Arsenal’s campaign has been somewhat hindered by injuries to key players like Martin Ødegaard, Gabriel Jesus, Gabriel Martinelli, Bukayo Saka, and Kai Havertz at various stages.
The Gunners return to action this Sunday as they face a struggling Ipswich Town side battling relegation.
