Fabrizio Romano has shared a new update regarding the future of Newcastle forward Alexander Isak, as speculation over a possible move to Liverpool continues.
Isak recently returned to Newcastle’s training facilities after missing their pre-season tour of Asia. However, he has yet to rejoin full training with the first team.
Newcastle reportedly turned down a £110 million offer from Liverpool for the 25-year-old striker, holding firm on their valuation of £150 million. Despite the rejection, Liverpool have not submitted a follow-up bid.
Manager Eddie Howe has said that Isak is currently not training with the squad, explaining that he “can’t involve him” at this time.
Although The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards reported that Newcastle have told Isak he won’t be sold to Liverpool this summer, Fabrizio Romano has offered a different perspective.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano said the transfer is “absolutely on, absolutely concrete, and absolutely likely.”
He added: “There were reports saying Newcastle told Isak he’s not for sale. I haven’t heard that, and Eddie Howe himself isn’t aware of it either.
“Alexander Isak wants to join Liverpool. He’s not interested in extending his contract. Liverpool want him, and he wants Liverpool.
“That’s where things stand. It now depends on Newcastle. As of now, they haven’t shut the door on the move, so the situation remains open. Liverpool are still focused on signing him.”
Regarding Howe’s own comments, after Newcastle’s 2-0 loss to Atletico Madrid in their final pre-season friendly, he indicated that the striker’s future is uncertain. He acknowledged that Isak could be moved on if he can’t be reintegrated into the team and noted some unease among the squad.
Howe said: “He’s here, so naturally he has a future at Newcastle. From our side, we’d love to bring him back into the group, but the conditions have to be right.
“There’s no fitness issue. But I do sense something within the squad that’s not helping the collective.”
