Liverpool remain determined to secure the signing of Florian Wirtz this summer.
The German attacking midfielder has reportedly expressed a strong desire to join the Reds, favoring Arne Slot’s vision over Vincent Kompany’s project at Bayern Munich.
The Merseyside club has already strengthened ties with Wirtz’s former Bayer Leverkusen teammate, Jeremie Frimpong. They’re also targeting reinforcement at left-back, with Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez in their sights.
Liverpool pushing ahead despite Leverkusen’s rejection
Despite Bayer Leverkusen rejecting a second offer—reported to be worth up to £109 million, including a substantial initial payment and performance-based add-ons—Liverpool remain undeterred. According to Fabrizio Romano via X (formerly Twitter), the club is “confident” in securing Wirtz’s signature, with a new round of negotiations planned.
Leverkusen are holding out for a €150 million (£126.4 million) valuation, and with the gap between offers now around £17 million, a compromise appears achievable.
Wirtz already set on Anfield move
Crucially, Wirtz is said to have already made up his mind. Liverpool have managed to outmaneuver Bayern Munich—a rare feat—by outlining a compelling long-term vision. Journalist Christian Falk noted that Slot’s promise of a leading role in the number 10 position was key to Wirtz’s decision. At Bayern, he would have had to compete with Jamal Musiala for that spot.
Now, it’s a matter of how far Liverpool are willing to go financially to meet Leverkusen’s demands.
Having secured Frimpong below market value due to a release clause, there’s optimism that Liverpool can allocate the necessary funds to finalize the Wirtz transfer. With the gap not overly large, investing a bit more for a player of Wirtz’s caliber seems a worthy move.
It’s now in the hands of Richard Hughes and Michael Edwards to seal the deal.
