Scottish champions Celtic have opened negotiations to re-sign Arsenal defender Kieran Tierney, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.
Tierney, who departed Celtic for Arsenal in 2019, has faced a challenging five years at the Emirates due to persistent injuries. During the 2023/24 season, the 27-year-old spent time on loan at Real Sociedad, gaining valuable experience in La Liga.
After returning to Arsenal, Tierney made his 125th appearance in a Carabao Cup quarter-final victory over Crystal Palace but had to be substituted in the 69th minute due to another injury.
Romano confirmed the ongoing discussions via social media, stating: “Negotiations are in progress for Kieran Tierney to return to Celtic from Arsenal. Talks are ongoing, and the 27-year-old fullback is eager for the move.”
Additionally, The Athletic’s David Ornstein reported that Arsenal opted not to activate an option to extend Tierney’s contract, which is set to expire at the end of the season. This decision leaves Tierney free to leave the club in June if no deal is finalized in January.
Ornstein explained: “Arsenal have decided against extending Kieran Tierney’s contract by another year. As a result, he will leave the Emirates by next summer at the latest, though he could depart during the January window.
“From January 1, Tierney can sign a pre-contract agreement with non-English clubs, ensuring a free transfer next summer. There’s interest from English clubs, a strong connection to Celtic, and the added experience of playing abroad during his loan spell at Real Sociedad.”
