Liverpool Still Eyeing Multiple Centre-Back Signings, Says Fabrizio Romano
Fabrizio Romano has suggested that Liverpool may still look to bring in more than one centre-back before the summer transfer window closes in just under three weeks.
With depth at the back currently lacking, many fans are hoping for defensive reinforcements before the September 1 deadline to ensure new head coach Arne Slot isn’t left short for the season ahead.
Liverpool have been heavily linked with Crystal Palace skipper Marc Guehi, while also showing interest in Parma’s young talent Giovanni Leoni and Brentford’s Nathan Collins.
Romano Provides Positive Update on Centre-Back Targets
Speaking on his YouTube channel early Tuesday morning, Romano offered some encouraging news for Liverpool supporters.
He revealed that the club is actively working on potential deals for both Guehi and Leoni. “It’s not a case of one or the other,” he said. “Liverpool really admire Leoni and see him as a top talent. While there hasn’t been an official bid to Parma yet, their interest is genuine and could develop further.”
He noted that Guehi’s situation is different. With his contract ending next summer, Palace risk losing him for free if they don’t sell now. This puts pressure on all parties to consider a deal in the final weeks of the window.
Romano emphasized: “Signing one doesn’t rule out the other. Liverpool are evaluating both options, taking financial factors into account. Once they have clarity on their budget, we’ll see how they move forward.”
He added confidently, “Liverpool will sign a centre-back. It’s just a matter of who—and possibly how many.”
Could Liverpool Land Two Defenders This Month?
Securing both Guehi and Leoni would be a significant achievement for sporting director Richard Hughes, but it’s clear that at least one addition is necessary before the window shuts.
Romano’s comments signal that the club is serious about addressing their lack of defensive depth, a concern shared by many fans as the season approaches.
Guehi’s contract status could work in Liverpool’s favor, with Palace reportedly valuing him at £40 million (per Ben Jacobs). Meanwhile, Romano’s remark that the Reds are “starting to think about” signing Leoni suggests they’ve moved beyond casual interest and could make a move soon—especially if progress stalls with Guehi.
At this stage, signing even one new centre-back would be a boost. But if Liverpool manage to secure two, it would go a long way toward easing concerns over defensive cover for the season ahead.
