Could Liverpool be set for a defensive reshuffle in the final hours of the transfer window, with one player arriving and another departing?
According to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, Liverpool have made an initial bid of £35 million for Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi, who is reportedly open to a move to the Premier League champions. Following that, The Guardian’s Ed Aarons stated that Palace are looking for an additional £5 million in bonuses and a 10% sell-on clause to complete the deal — terms which the London club are believed to be willing to accept if met.
While Liverpool work to secure Guehi before Monday night’s deadline, they may also receive a late approach for one of their own players.
AC Milan eyeing Joe Gomez in late-window swoop
Sources close to Empire of the Kop claim that AC Milan are considering a move for Joe Gomez, amid uncertainty around their attempt to sign Manchester City’s Manuel Akanji. The Italian giants view Gomez as an alternative to Villarreal’s Juan Foyth. With his experience and ability to cover multiple positions, the Liverpool defender is seen as a valuable target for the Milanese club.
However, a deal could prove challenging. Gomez, Liverpool’s longest-serving current player, is still under contract for another two years and is also attracting interest from other Premier League teams.
Could Gomez leave before the window closes?
Gomez’s game time has been limited under new manager Arne Slot. So much so that, with Jeremie Frimpong injured and Conor Bradley only just returning, Slot opted to play Dominik Szoboszlai at right-back in the recent win over Newcastle.
Despite his limited appearances — just 18 under Slot so far — the Dutch manager has praised Gomez’s professionalism and readiness. But with Bradley fit again and the potential addition of Guehi, opportunities for Gomez could become even scarcer in what would be his 11th season at Anfield.
Given his loyalty and professionalism over the past decade, no one would fault Gomez if he sought a new challenge. He remains the type of player any manager would want in their squad.
If Richard Hughes can finalize the deal for Guehi within the next day or so, Liverpool may be open to letting Milan pursue Gomez. However, if the Guehi transfer falls through, it’s unlikely that the Reds will sanction Gomez’s departure before the window shuts — meaning Milan may have to wait until 2026.
