Diogo Jota’s wife shared a touching message about their recent wedding earlier this week, writing: “Yes to forever.”

Tragically, Liverpool and Portugal star Jota, 28, and his younger brother André Silva, who played for Penafiel in Portugal’s second division, died in a car accident in Spain in the early hours of Thursday morning.

Jota had married his longtime partner Rute Cardoso on June 22. She posted photos from their wedding on Instagram this week, captioning one with “My dream came true.” Jota responded, “I’m the lucky one.” The couple had three young children.

The Portuguese Football Federation first announced the deaths of Jota and his brother André Silva, also a professional footballer.

According to Spanish reports, the accident occurred in Cernadilla, Zamora, when a tyre on the Lamborghini they were traveling in blew out during an overtaking maneuver. The car then caught fire.

The Spanish Guardia Civil told the BBC: “The information we have so far is that the car, a Lamborghini, crashed due to a tyre blowout while overtaking. It happened around 00:30 local time in Cernadilla, Zamora. The vehicle caught fire, and both occupants died.”

The Portuguese Football Federation expressed deep sorrow over the loss: “The entire Portuguese football community is devastated by the deaths of Diogo Jota and André Silva this morning.”

They added, “Diogo Jota was not only an outstanding player with nearly 50 caps for Portugal but also an extraordinary person loved by teammates and opponents alike. His joy was infectious, and he was a role model in his community.”

The Federation offered condolences to the families, friends, and clubs—Liverpool FC and FC Penafiel—and said, “We have lost two champions. Their passing is an irreplaceable loss for Portuguese football, and we will honor their legacy every day.”

Tributes have flooded in from across the football world since the announcement.

Liverpool released a statement saying the club is “devastated by this tragic loss” and pledged support to Jota’s family, friends, teammates, and staff as they cope with the unimaginable.

FC Porto, where both brothers began their careers, expressed mourning: “FC Porto is in shock and deep sorrow. We send our sincere condolences to the family and friends of Diogo Jota and André Silva, who was also part of our youth ranks. Rest in peace.”
