Nunez open to Saudi switch

Darwin Nunez, heavily linked with a move away from Anfield, is now reportedly open to leaving Liverpool. According to TEAMtalk, the 26-year-old has given the green light to a transfer to Al-Hilal, intrigued by their ambitious long-term vision and their recent high-profile appointment of Simone Inzaghi as head coach.

Talks between the player’s representatives and the Saudi Pro League club began in April and have accelerated recently. With a verbal agreement said to be in place, it’s now up to the two clubs to finalise terms.

Liverpool are hoping to recoup most of the £65 million they paid Benfica for Nunez in 2022, with formal discussions with Al-Hilal expected shortly.

Fabrizio Romano also provided an update on Wednesday morning via X, reporting that the Saudi club are “close to” securing the striker’s signature, with the final decision now resting with Nunez himself.

While earlier reports suggested Nunez preferred to stay in Europe, his stance appears to have shifted—demonstrating once again the draw of the Saudi Pro League.

Despite a promising pre-season in which he scored five goals—nearly matching his 2024/25 tally—Nunez looks set to end his Anfield chapter after a three-year spell marked by flashes of brilliance and inconsistency.

With just one Premier League start since January, plus the arrival of Hugo Ekitike and Liverpool’s ongoing pursuit of Alexander Isak, it’s clear that Nunez has fallen down the pecking order under Arne Slot.

It’s unfortunate that things never quite clicked for the Uruguayan despite some memorable moments, but Liverpool stand to earn a sizeable fee from his sale—possibly funding a marquee move for Isak.
