Cody Gakpo will not face a suspension for his goal celebration during Liverpool’s 5-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, though he is expected to receive an official warning from the Football Association.
After scoring Liverpool’s third goal in their Premier League title-clinching match, the 25-year-old took off his shirt to reveal a vest reading “I Belong to Jesus,” earning an automatic yellow card from referee Thomas Bramall for the shirt removal.
There had been speculation that Gakpo might face additional punishment for potentially violating an IFAB rule that forbids players from displaying religious, political, or personal messages. However, according to the Daily Mail, the FA will instead issue a formal reminder of the rules, with no further disciplinary action expected.
This isn’t the first time this season the FA has responded to such matters; Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi was previously cautioned for wearing rainbow armbands inscribed with messages like “I love Jesus” and “Jesus loves you.”
Keep It in Perspective
Fortunately, the FA appears to be handling Gakpo’s case with a sense of reason. Punishing him more harshly for such a message would have seemed excessive. While the rules aim to prevent controversial or divisive statements, it’s clear there are more pressing concerns in the game—such as ongoing frustration with VAR or the unresolved situation regarding Manchester City’s financial charges.
Once the FA addresses Gakpo, that should be the end of it. Liverpool fans will certainly be focused on celebrating their 20th league title, not caught up in off-field distractions
