“I’ve maintained that the transfer fee wouldn’t be the sticking point. Whether it reaches £150m with add-ons or lands closer to £130m+, that could have done it.”

He added:
“However, since Isak’s public statement, Newcastle’s leadership has become more determined to keep him. It might now require even more to convince them, unless they succeed in signing two new strikers.”

Hope has repeatedly pointed out that Newcastle are unlikely to let Isak go unless they strengthen their own forward line. Their second bid for Brentford’s Yoane Wissa was reportedly rejected this week, and although they’re still pursuing him, signing two strikers before the 1 September deadline seems improbable.

Newcastle’s resolve is understandable—particularly in light of recent events—but a sizable offer from Liverpool, in the region of £130m or more, could still make them think twice.
