Chelsea are now ‘in talks’ with the €100 million-rated Liverpool target — and hold the upper hand in negotiations.

Posted on May 31, 2025 By Dailynewsupdate No Comments on Chelsea are now ‘in talks’ with the €100 million-rated Liverpool target — and hold the upper hand in negotiations.

Chelsea are reportedly leading Liverpool in the pursuit of Hugo Ekitike ahead of the summer transfer window.

Both clubs are urgently looking to bolster their attacking options, with the striker position being a particular priority. While Christopher Nkunku hasn’t performed poorly, Chelsea seem prepared to offload the 27-year-old, suggesting they’re serious about reshaping their forward line.

Ekitike, considered one of Europe’s top young attacking talents, could be a smart addition to their squad.

Chelsea in Pole Position for Ekitike

Although Liverpool recently pulled off a surprise win over Bayern Munich in the race for Florian Wirtz, they now face tough competition from Chelsea for Ekitike. Despite being open to paying over £100 million for Wirtz, the Reds appear hesitant about Eintracht Frankfurt’s €100 million (£84m) valuation of Ekitike.

According to Christian Falk, Chelsea are currently in active negotiations with the player’s camp and are clearly ahead in the race.

“At this point, what was once a three-way contest involving Chelsea, Liverpool, and Arsenal is now down to two clubs,” the BILD journalist told CaughtOffside. “Chelsea are best positioned, having already opened talks and showing real intent.”

Liverpool, however, remain in the picture, even as they prepare for a record-breaking deal for Wirtz.

Darwin Núñez No Longer the Answer?

Liverpool arguably have a more pressing need for a central striker compared to their rivals. While Nkunku’s overall stats for Chelsea haven’t been disastrous, his return of just three league goals (and five in the UEFA Conference League) raises concerns. Still, Darwin Núñez hasn’t fared much better, managing only five Premier League goals himself.

Need for Central Firepower

The Reds are heavily reliant on their wingers—especially Mo Salah—for goals, highlighting the urgency for a reliable centre-forward. Ekitike’s record—34 goal contributions in 48 games, averaging one every 107.2 minutes—is impressive in Bundesliga terms.

The critical question is whether this output can be replicated in the Premier League. And whether Liverpool are willing to wait for a better opportunity or push harder now.

Despite Chelsea’s fourth-place finish in the league, their Champions League qualification strengthens their case as they continue to push for Ekitike’s signature.
