BBC reporter gives update on Liverpool vs Manchester United match, as the game faces the possibility of being cancelled.

An update has emerged regarding Liverpool’s match against Manchester United following the Met Office’s amber weather warning ahead of the highly anticipated fixture.

As Sunday’s Premier League game approached, there was much speculation about a potential postponement due to forecasts predicting heavy snow and freezing rain, with significant disruptions expected to public transport. Temperatures were also expected to fall below freezing near Anfield early Sunday morning. The Met Office issued a clear warning about the hazardous conditions, stating:

“Snow will become persistent and locally heavy as it moves south to north across the warning area. In addition to snow, a period of freezing rain is likely, bringing hazardous travel conditions before milder air moves in by Sunday morning.”

The warning further added: “3-7cm of snow is likely across most areas, with locally 15-30cm expected on higher ground in Wales and the southern Pennines. Freezing rain could cause ice buildup, especially in parts of Wales, before the milder air leads to a rapid thaw on Sunday.”

In response, a decision on whether the match will go ahead has been postponed until midday, with the Safety Advisory Group set to reconvene due to anticipated changes in weather conditions. A meeting was initially scheduled for 9am to assess whether it was safe to proceed. BBC reporter Ian Dennis confirmed that the group would review the safety of access to the stadium, as there were no concerns about the pitch or stadium itself.

The meeting was attended by representatives from both clubs, Merseyside Police, and Liverpool City Council. Liverpool later released a statement, saying: “A safety meeting was held this morning to assess the weather and travel conditions for today’s match. At this stage, the game is planned to go ahead as scheduled, with another safety meeting set for midday to review the latest conditions.”

The situation is being closely monitored, and fans have been urged to take extra care. This follows the postponement of the Merseyside derby in December due to severe weather and high winds, which caused significant travel disruptions in the area. A similar Safety Advisory Group meeting at Goodison Park concluded that the derby should be postponed for safety reasons.
