Liverpool legend Graeme Souness expressed that he had no complaints about Michael Oliver’s refereeing during Wednesday’s Merseyside derby.
While Virgil van Dijk criticized Oliver for lacking control of the match and Liverpool manager Arne Slot was visibly furious—earning a red card for his post-match protests—Souness had a different perspective. Both Slot and his assistant, Sipke Hulshoff, have since been charged by the FA for their actions.
Souness, however, thoroughly enjoyed the match and believed Oliver’s lenient officiating enhanced the spectacle. Writing in his Mail column, he described it as a “throwback” to a time when referees allowed more physicality, unlike the modern game, which he feels has been diluted by constant interruptions and excessive simulation.
Despite acknowledging positive aspects of today’s football—such as improved stadiums and extensive media coverage—Souness argued that fans still appreciate the intensity and physical battles seen in Wednesday’s game.
Reflecting on his playing days, he admitted he would have relished the chance to be part of such a match. He recalled the excitement of facing tough opponents like Peter Reid and Bryan Robson, relishing the physical and mental challenge they presented. Those encounters, he said, were the ultimate test, and he would eagerly anticipate them the night before.
