Mikel Arteta has acknowledged Liverpool’s superior squad depth as a crucial factor in the Premier League title race after Arsenal’s 2-2 draw with Aston Villa on Saturday. The Gunners surrendered a two-goal lead, with Gabriel Martinelli and Kai Havertz scoring early before Youri Tielemans and Ollie Watkins struck back for Villa. The result leaves Arsenal six points behind Liverpool, who defeated Brentford 2-0 earlier in the day. Liverpool’s advantage could grow to nine points if they win their game in hand.
Arteta highlighted the difference squad depth makes, noting Liverpool’s ability to rotate players effectively. He admitted that Arsenal’s substitutes had minimal impact, while physical exhaustion affected his team’s performance late in the match. Despite a spirited effort to regain the lead, Arsenal failed to secure a decisive goal.
Discussing Arsenal’s lack of attacking depth, Arteta pointed out that Raheem Sterling was the only senior forward available on the bench. He admitted the team feels “very short” in options, fueling speculation about potential signings in the January transfer window. Players like Benjamin Sesko, Dusan Vlahovic, and Viktor Gyokeres have been linked as potential reinforcements.
Meanwhile, Arsenal legend Paul Merson criticized Thomas Partey for his defensive lapse in Watkins’ equalizer, describing it as unacceptable for a player of his experience. Merson emphasized that such errors undermine title-winning aspirations and questioned Partey’s discipline in crucial moments.
As Arsenal considers their transfer options, they have reportedly shown interest in Napoli’s Victor Osimhen and Sporting CP’s Viktor Gyokeres. However, concerns about Osimhen’s attitude have been raised, while Manchester United may pose competition for Gyokeres.
