Arsenal has come under fire for a controversial decision regarding ticket allocation for their FA Cup third-round clash against Manchester United.
The two football giants faced off in one of the most anticipated matches of the round at the Emirates Stadium, but neither team wore their traditional red jerseys, in support of Arsenal’s “No More Red” campaign. However, fans watching on BBC noticed a large section of empty seats in the stadium, despite the expectation that the match would be a sell-out.
The empty seats were notably visible in the upper tier, and the reason behind their absence was more complex than it seemed. According to FA Cup regulations, away teams are typically allowed to bring up to 9,000 supporters, but Arsenal only provided Manchester United with 8,000 tickets.
Mike Keegan of the Daily Mail reported that Arsenal’s decision to limit the allocation was based on “safety concerns.” The Safety Advisory Group, which includes club officials, council members, and emergency services representatives, had the final say on the matter.
Manchester United voiced their displeasure, requesting the extra 1,000 tickets, but their request was denied. They then proposed distributing the remaining tickets to families and children associated with their charity, but this suggestion was also rejected. The club further recommended offering the tickets to emergency service workers and people involved in grassroots football, though this plan was ultimately deemed unfeasible due to time constraints.
As a result, the seats in United’s designated away section remained empty.
Fans on social media were quick to express their frustration over the situation. One user called it “a sad and unnecessary state of affairs,” while another criticized Arsenal, writing, “Reminder that Arsenal are as pathetic as it gets.” Some even questioned the club’s reputation, with one comment reading, “For a club that deems themselves ‘classy,’ they’re probably the most classless club going.” Another added, “Even with this nonsense, they will still not win the FA Cup. Foolish team.”
Despite the controversy, United will receive a portion of the ticket sales, as gate receipts from FA Cup matches are split between the two teams.
