Arsenal Make Champions League History With Commanding Win Over Athletic Bilbao
Arsenal have etched their name into the history books of the European Cup/Champions League following a dominant win over Athletic Bilbao.
The Gunners kicked off their 2025/26 Champions League campaign on Tuesday with a strong performance at the Estadio de San Mamés, securing a 2-0 victory thanks to second-half goals from substitutes Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard.
Martinelli broke the deadlock in the 72nd minute after a clinical run and finish past Unai Simón, before Trossard sealed the result just minutes from the final whistle with a well-placed shot.
Beyond the three points, the win carried historical significance—Arsenal became the first team in European Cup/Champions League history to win six consecutive matches against Spanish opposition.
This latest triumph follows victories over Sevilla during the 2023/24 season, as well as wins over Girona and Real Madrid in the same campaign. The Gunners defeated Sevilla both home and away, including a 2-1 result at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán Stadium.
Their impressive record includes a commanding 3-0 home win against Real Madrid, with Declan Rice netting two free-kicks to help Arsenal eliminate the Spanish giants 5-1 on aggregate.
Next up for Arsenal in the group stage is a clash with Olympiacos on October 1, followed by a home fixture against Atlético Madrid on October 21, where they’ll look to extend their historic run.
