Arsenal fans have urged Mikel Arteta to bench two players following their team’s 2-0 defeat to Newcastle in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final.
Despite being designated as the home side, Arsenal were unable to secure a favorable result to carry into the second leg at St James’ Park. Newcastle delivered a dominant performance, opening the scoring in the first half with Alexander Isak’s close-range finish. Their lead was doubled in the second half when David Raya failed to control a shot, allowing Anthony Gordon to score from the rebound.
While Eddie Howe’s team executed a perfect away game plan, Arsenal struggled to capitalize on their opportunities. The Gunners managed 16 shots within the first hour but failed to find the net, with Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Dubravka making just three saves during that period. Despite mounting late pressure, Arsenal were unable to break through, leaving the match at 2-0 in Newcastle’s favor.
Fans have singled out Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli as players they believe should be dropped for the return leg on Tyneside. Some supporters even suggested the duo might no longer be fit for the squad.
One fan commented, “Trossard and Martinelli can leave now. They’re just not good enough anymore—consistently poor performances.” Another added, “Gabriel Jesus, our most in-form player, is being benched for Trossard and Martinelli.” A third fan remarked, “Sterling surely couldn’t be worse than Trossard and Martinelli tonight.” Others echoed similar sentiments, calling for improvements in Arsenal’s attacking options.
