Liverpool may be facing an unexpected departure just days after celebrating their Premier League triumph.
The 2024/25 season was a dream campaign for the Reds, who secured the Premier League title in Arne Slot’s debut year at the helm.
The celebrations reached their peak on Sunday when Liverpool lifted the trophy at Anfield following a 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace, cheered on by a delighted home crowd.
Looking ahead, the club is preparing for an active summer transfer window, with Jeremie Frimpong, Florian Wirtz, and Milos Kerkez all strongly linked to potential moves to Anfield.
However, reports suggest the club could soon lose a key figure from its coaching staff.
According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Slot’s assistant John Heitinga is on the verge of leaving, with discussions progressing for him to take over as head coach at Ajax. Liverpool have reportedly already started the search for his replacement.
Romano shared on social media: “EXCL: Liverpool gives permission to John Heitinga for talks with Ajax as negotiations to become the new head coach are advanced. Liverpool have begun the process of looking at replacements if the Heitinga deal goes through, as looks likely.”
Last summer, Slot detailed why he chose to appoint Heitinga—formerly of Everton—as his assistant.
“Premier League experience. John has played many matches in the league and was an assistant at West Ham last season, so he offers knowledge both as a player and coach in England,” Slot said. “He also worked with someone I know well, and our football philosophies are quite similar, so I believe he’ll quickly align with our approach.”
Heitinga made 140 appearances for Everton and also played for Fulham, Hertha BSC, and Ajax before retiring. He then transitioned into coaching, taking roles at Ajax and West Ham before reuniting with Slot at Liverpool.
