Arne Slot has shared his thoughts on the reaction of Liverpool fans during the 60th minute of their Carabao Cup semi-final first-leg defeat to Tottenham on Wednesday.
The Reds fell 1-0 after Lucas Bergvall scored an 86th-minute winner past Alisson. However, Liverpool players argued Bergvall should not have been on the pitch, claiming he deserved a second yellow card for a foul on Kostas Tsimikas earlier in the match.
This loss marked Liverpool’s first defeat since their 1-0 loss to Nottingham Forest on September 14, highlighting their impressive season under Slot.
During the 60th minute, Slot introduced Trent Alexander-Arnold amid ongoing speculation about the right-back’s future. With his contract set to expire in the summer and Real Madrid reportedly having a £20 million bid rejected in January, fans responded by chanting “The Scouser in our team,” a tribute often sung for the 26-year-old.
Reflecting on the moment, Slot told Liverpool’s official website: “Trent has had one difficult game for us and maybe a few that were OK to good. But mainly, he has had great games this season.
“There’s a lot of focus on him right now, but I’d also like to highlight how well he performed when he came on for the last half hour [against Tottenham] and how our fans reacted to him. That’s what pleased me most during that game.”
Liverpool now turn their attention to a back-to-back cup schedule, hosting League Two side Accrington Stanley at Anfield this weekend.
Accrington, managed by John Doolan after a challenging start to the season, have regained form recently. Their forward Josh Woods, a lifelong Liverpool fan, is especially excited about the tie.
Woods, who attended Liverpool’s Carabao Cup final win over Chelsea last year but missed the game due to ticket delays, told BBC Sport: “When I watch Liverpool, I always think, ‘I’d love to play at Anfield one day.’ Now it’s about to happen. Dreams do come true.”
