After securing the Premier League title this season, Liverpool have now turned their attention to summer transfer plans.
New manager Arne Slot has already outlined his preferred signings and is actively working to bring them to Anfield.
With Trent Alexander-Arnold set to depart the club this summer—reportedly to join Real Madrid—Liverpool have identified Bayer Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong as a potential replacement. The dynamic wing-back is seen as an ideal fit to take over Alexander-Arnold’s role.
In addition to Frimpong, Liverpool are also interested in Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez as a way to strengthen their options at left-back.
Slot targets Wirtz to boost creativity
Looking to inject more creativity into the squad following Alexander-Arnold’s expected exit, Slot has made Bayer Leverkusen playmaker Florian Wirtz his primary target, according to TBR Football.
The Dutch manager has given Liverpool the go-ahead to intensify their pursuit of the German international midfielder.
Alexander-Arnold’s departure is seen as a major loss in terms of creative output, which has heightened the club’s interest in Wirtz. However, Leverkusen’s asking price is high, and Liverpool will face stiff competition from Bayern Munich in the race for his signature.
Journalist Graeme Bailey told TBR Football:
“Liverpool believe Bayern are leading the race for Wirtz and they’re cautious not to waste time. But Slot has backed the move, largely in response to Trent’s exit. That loss of creativity was evident in the League Cup final, where Salah was tightly marked and Mac Allister struggled to influence the game.
It highlighted how Liverpool can be contained when lacking creative spark, which is why the focus on a player like Wirtz is so strong—even if he isn’t a traditional number 10.”
A potential game-changer for Liverpool
Bringing Wirtz to Anfield this summer could significantly enhance Liverpool’s title chances next season. A player with both goal-scoring and playmaking ability, he fits well with Slot’s tactical approach and could thrive under his management.
Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso has previously described Wirtz as a “special player.”
