Arne Slot’s hopes of signing Christian Pulisic have suffered a setback, with AC Milan preparing to offer the American winger a new contract.
Pulisic had recently been linked with Liverpool as they aim to strengthen their squad for the Premier League title race. Since joining Milan from Chelsea in the summer of 2023, the 26-year-old has been a standout performer, contributing eight goals and six assists across all competitions.
Despite his strong form, Milan have struggled domestically, sitting eighth in Serie A and eight points behind the Champions League qualification spots. Pulisic’s performances, however, caught Liverpool’s attention, with the Reds reportedly undeterred by his contract, which has two years remaining and a club option for an additional year.
Milan, keen to ward off interest from the Premier League leaders, are now moving to secure Pulisic’s future. According to Calciomercato, Milan are working to extend contracts for key players, with Pulisic next in line for a pay increase of nearly £1 million annually.
Pulisic is reportedly fully committed to his Milan adventure and focused on winning silverware with the Italian giants. The new deal would make it increasingly difficult for Liverpool to pursue a transfer.
This development is a blow for Slot, who only welcomed Federico Chiesa to his squad last summer. The Liverpool manager has hinted at the need for reinforcements in January, urging the club to invest wisely.
“Bringing players in is always about making smart decisions,” Slot said. “If you look at examples like Klopp in 2019, some might say doing nothing is the best approach. But there’s also the Chelsea way—spending £1.2 billion—which shows success can come in many forms.”
Slot emphasized the importance of balancing academy talent with external signings, highlighting that Liverpool’s current position proves multiple strategies can achieve success in football. “It’s good for the league that there are different ways to compete at the top,” he concluded.
