Liverpool fans are voicing concerns over head coach Arne Slot after he appeared to backtrack on earlier comments about the club’s summer transfer plans.
Slot, 46, is on the verge of clinching a Premier League title and could see his side crowned champions as early as Sunday. The Reds need just six points from their remaining six matches to match Manchester United’s record of 20 titles. If Arsenal lose to Ipswich and Liverpool beat Leicester, the title would be theirs.
Slot’s success has come despite making only one major signing—Federico Chiesa—before the 2024/25 season. While fans are pleased that stars like Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk have extended their contracts, many still believe reinforcements are crucial for next season.
Earlier this month, Slot seemed optimistic about strengthening the squad, stating, “We will make this team very strong next season,” and expressing confidence in Salah’s continued impact.
However, in a press conference on Friday, Slot seemed to shift his stance, saying, “Let’s see what the rest of the summer brings… Maybe if we can keep this team, it will already be a big summer.” He emphasized the importance of retaining the current squad and suggested that new signings might not be essential.
This change in tone sparked a wave of criticism from fans online. One fan wrote, “If you don’t sign players, we’ll finish 6th—especially with Robertson still starting.” Another said, “Someone clearly told him to backtrack after last week’s busy summer talk.” A third fan added, “Has he not noticed how weak our left-back options are? We need serious investment.”
