Anthony Gordon has shared a farewell message for his former Newcastle teammate Alexander Isak after the striker’s record-breaking transfer to Liverpool — a move that has sparked mixed reactions.
The long-running transfer drama of the summer ended on Monday when Isak finally secured his desired switch, just hours before the window closed.
The 25-year-old had refused to play for Newcastle in an attempt to push through the move, and Liverpool ultimately came forward with a Premier League record £125 million offer. Speaking in his first interview with the club’s media team, Isak said:
“It’s been a long road getting here, but I’m thrilled to be part of this team, this club, and everything it represents.”
He added, “I’m just glad it’s over so I can focus on football again. I can’t wait to meet the squad, connect with the fans, and get back on the pitch.”
However, Isak’s behavior during the transfer saga has drawn criticism. According to the Mail, one Newcastle teammate reportedly had to be calmed down by a fellow countryman during a tense meeting about Isak’s future.
Still, shortly after the move was confirmed, two Newcastle players publicly showed their support for the Swedish striker.
On Instagram, Anthony Gordon posted:
“Whatever’s happened, it’s been an honour to play alongside you. You’re one of the players I’ve had the best on-field chemistry with — but more than that, you’re a great guy and a top teammate. Wishing you all the best, brother.”
Sven Botman also shared his thoughts on Isak’s departure, writing:
“What began as teammates became one of my closest friendships. No more words needed, brother — wishing you success in this next chapter @alex_Isak.”
Gordon Relates to Isak’s Situation
Having been strongly linked with a move to Liverpool himself last summer, Gordon was the first Newcastle player to publicly comment on Isak’s exit.
“I understand exactly what Alex is going through,” Gordon told the Mail during Newcastle’s pre-season tour in Asia. “For me personally, this summer has been a relief — the first in years without transfer rumours. It’s been such a mental break.”
“That’s why I really sympathize with Alex. He’s under a lot of pressure, and so is the club. Hopefully, it all works out for everyone involved.”
Gordon also addressed the speculation that surrounded his own potential return to Merseyside, admitting that the failed transfer took a toll.
“It’s true,” he said. “I wouldn’t lie about it. It was tough — especially after the Euros, which were mentally really difficult. I was there but didn’t play.
Then the transfer drama came in. With the club’s PSR situation, I thought I might be sold at some point in the window. When it didn’t happen, I had to reset mentally — and doing that twice was tough.”
