Andy Robertson Reflects on Summer Decision to Stay at Liverpool

Liverpool’s vice-captain, Andy Robertson, has acknowledged that for the first time in his career, he seriously contemplated his future at Anfield during the recent summer break, before ultimately choosing to remain with the club.

Speaking to the Daily Record, the Scotland international admitted:
“This was the first summer where I really had to think about what’s next for me. Normally, there’s no question—I know exactly where I stand. But this time, I had to evaluate everything. In the end, we decided that our hearts were still at Liverpool, and I have no regrets about that choice.”

Robertson had been linked with a potential move to Atletico Madrid, but instead, Liverpool opted to loan out Kostas Tsimikas and bring in 21-year-old Hungarian left-back Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth in a £40 million deal.

Kerkez has started every match so far this season, which has seen Robertson spend more time on the bench than in previous years. The 31-year-old reflected on the adjustment, saying:
“I’ve always been someone who plays week in, week out. Apart from the early days, I’ve been a regular starter for eight years at Liverpool. Sitting on the bench has been unusual, but over the summer I thought long and hard about what I want. I made my decision, and I’m confident that if I keep performing, I’ll still play plenty—for both club and country.”

A Veteran Leader in Liverpool’s Evolving Squad

Now serving as Liverpool’s vice-captain, Robertson remains an important figure in the dressing room. Despite occasional criticism—such as from a former referee for his on-field language—he’s widely viewed as a strong, vocal leader.

Having won every major trophy under Jürgen Klopp and lifted the Premier League again last season under Arne Slot, Robertson brings invaluable experience to a squad in transition. While Kerkez will continue to feature prominently, Robertson is expected to be regularly rotated and still play a key role as the campaign progresses.

With the summer arrivals of defenders Jeremie Frimpong and Giovanni Leoni, Liverpool have reinforced their backline, but Robertson’s leadership and experience remain crucial.

Looking ahead, the Scot said:
“Hopefully, by next summer, I’ll be heading to a World Cup—with a few more trophies added to my collection.”
