Andy Robertson has already made his position clear to Thomas Frank as Tottenham step up January transfer discussions with Liverpool. Spurs had originally targeted the 31-year-old as a possible free signing in the summer, with his contract nearing its end, but Ben Davies’ injury has pushed them to act sooner.

The Scotland captain has seen his role at Anfield diminish following the arrival of Milos Kerkez, prompting him to reflect on his future. Speaking to BBC Sport earlier this month, Robertson said he is weighing his options, though his preference is clear. While he would like to stay at Liverpool, he stressed that the outcome will depend on talks with the club and his family after a demanding summer.

Since arriving from Hull City for £8 million in 2017, Robertson has enjoyed major success with the Reds, lifting two Premier League titles and the Champions League. Recently, however, he has slipped behind Kerkez in the pecking order, playing just 181 minutes since mid-December as the Hungarian has hit form.

Robertson has not hidden his frustration at the lack of game time, describing himself as a player who always wants to be on the pitch. He has spoken about pushing through injuries and less-than-ideal fitness in the past because of his drive to contribute, adding that players comfortable with being on the bench lack the right mentality. While he has accepted his reduced role this season, he made clear that regular football remains a priority.

Against that backdrop, a January switch to Spurs looks increasingly realistic, even after Tottenham confirmed the signing of Brazilian left-back Souza. Destiny Udogie is expected to be Thomas Frank’s first choice when fully fit, but Robertson would still be set for consistent involvement for the remainder of the season if the move is completed.
