Thomas Tuchel has begun a new chapter as England manager, with two World Cup qualifiers against Albania and Latvia set for this month.

England’s training camp kicked off on Monday, with all 26 squad members reporting to St George’s Park. Among them was Dan Burn, who caught Liverpool fans’ attention after an interaction with Jordan Henderson while rewatching his goal in Newcastle United’s Carabao Cup win over Liverpool.

After naming his squad, Tuchel was forced to make a late adjustment by calling up a Premier League star. On the first day of training, he deviated from Gareth Southgate’s previous plans, signaling a fresh start for the national team.

Despite Southgate’s departure, Ben White remains absent from the squad after previously refusing to play under the former manager.

Former England international Chris Waddle, who earned 62 caps, believes Arsenal defender White should be barred from the national team due to his stance under Southgate.

“No, I wouldn’t bring Ben White back in. He said he didn’t want to be picked again,” Waddle told 10bet.

“He threw his toys out of the pram, didn’t he? And now he suddenly wants to play? So, he gets to pick and choose his England career?

“Listen, you never say you don’t want to play for England.”

Waddle continued: “I would never have said that—I’d have played until I was 50 if I could. Modern players who say, ‘I wasn’t picked, so don’t pick me again,’ suddenly change their minds when the opportunity arises.

“For the time he refused to play, I’d give him the same amount of time out. If that was a year or two, then he should wait the same period before being considered again. You should never say no to England.

“If you don’t get along with the manager or the style of play, you likely wouldn’t be picked anyway. But if you receive a late call-up, you don’t turn it down.”

Tuchel’s Stance on Ben White

White’s current injury ruled him out of Tuchel’s first England squad, but the new manager still has him in mind for future selections.

“He would love to be back in the squad, but given the severity of his injury, it’s too soon,” Tuchel said in last Friday’s press conference.

“I’m happy he’s back to regular training. We’re monitoring his progress. Now, it’s about getting more minutes, and he has every chance to return when he’s ready.”
