Alexander Isak’s admiration for Liverpool has resurfaced amid reports of preliminary transfer talks between the Reds and Newcastle United.
The Swedish striker, who has netted 45 Premier League goals over the past two seasons, has become one of the most in-demand forwards in Europe. While Newcastle’s Champions League qualification had cast doubt on any potential move, speculation about his future has continued throughout the summer.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool have now made a formal approach to Newcastle to explore a possible record-breaking transfer for the 25-year-old. Romano added that Newcastle, who are keen to keep Isak and are considering a new contract offer, will have the final say.
Back in December, The Telegraph reported Newcastle valued Isak at £150 million, while The Athletic’s David Ornstein noted the striker appeared content at the club, particularly after securing Champions League football.
Ultimately, should Liverpool submit a bid that meets Newcastle’s valuation, the decision will likely rest with Isak himself.
In an interview with The Gazette earlier this year, Isak revealed he enjoys playing against Liverpool, pointing to the similarities in both teams’ high-pressing, fast-paced styles.
“I really enjoy the games against Liverpool,” he said. “They’re similar to us — pressing high and playing direct — which creates counter-attacking chances, the kind of game I like. I’ve had good experiences against them.”
Ahead of the Carabao Cup final in March — which Newcastle won 2-1 — Isak also expressed respect for Virgil van Dijk and Liverpool’s defense, though he emphasized his focus is always on his own performance.
“I wouldn’t say I fear anyone. I respect Van Dijk and their whole defense, but I always focus on myself. If I play my best, it helps the team.”
Liverpool have recently bolstered their defense further with the signings of full-backs Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez, adding to the intrigue around a potential move for Isak.
