The ongoing transfer saga surrounding Newcastle striker Alexander Isak has taken a dramatic new turn—just minutes before Liverpool begin their Premier League campaign.
The Reds kick off the season with a home clash against Bournemouth on Friday. New manager Arne Slot has named all four of the club’s new outfield signings in his starting lineup, following a busy transfer window on Merseyside.
However, Liverpool’s transfer activity isn’t over yet. On Friday, they confirmed the signing of 18-year-old centre-back Giovanni Leoni from Parma.
Speaking to Sky Sports on Thursday, Slot also hinted that the club is still in the market for a centre-forward to support new arrival Hugo Ekitike. Last month, Liverpool had a £110 million offer for Alexander Isak turned down by Newcastle.
Now, according to Craig Hope of the Daily Mail, Isak is reportedly refusing to play for Newcastle and will miss their opening game against Aston Villa on Thursday.
A major development occurred Thursday night, as Brentford agreed a £37 million deal to sign Dango Ouattara from Bournemouth. That move could set off a chain reaction, with Yoane Wissa — linked with Newcastle — potentially leaving Brentford. If Wissa moves, it could clear the way for Isak’s exit, possibly at a record-breaking British transfer fee.
Newcastle, meanwhile, have shifted their focus. Hope reports the club is now eyeing Goncalo Ramos as a striker target. The Portuguese forward scored off the bench for PSG in their UEFA Super Cup win over Tottenham, but he is not a regular starter in Paris.
Newcastle had previously thought a deal for Ramos unlikely, but he is now considered a viable option. If both Ramos and Wissa are signed, it would likely prompt Isak’s departure — provided Liverpool meet Newcastle’s steep valuation.
The Magpies are reluctant to sell but could demand over £150 million for the 25-year-old, who is under contract for another three years.
