Alexander Isak is likely to miss out on millions after Newcastle arranged to exclude a payment from his transfer deal.

Although Alexander Isak never officially submitted a transfer request, he will miss out on a significant sum after Newcastle United removed a loyalty bonus from his record-breaking move to Liverpool.

Following weeks of speculation, Liverpool have now struck a deal to sign the Swedish striker.

The Reds will pay £125 million – a figure that breaks the Premier League transfer record previously held by Enzo Fernandez’s £106 million switch from Benfica to Chelsea. Including solidarity payments, Newcastle will receive £130 million in total. According to the Mail, negotiations between the clubs intensified on Sunday night, leading to a final agreement before a medical scheduled for Monday.

Isak is expected to sign a six-year contract with Arne Slot’s team.

Interestingly, as part of the deal, Isak will not receive a loyalty bonus from Newcastle – a clause reportedly negotiated out of the transfer by the club, per journalist Craig Hope. Martin Salisbury, a solicitor and academic at the University Campus of Football Business, explained that players often avoid submitting a formal transfer request to protect their financial entitlements.

The BBC notes: “By not formally requesting a transfer, players maintain the value of their contracts and can claim outstanding wages if sold. However, formally asking to leave can mean forfeiting certain payments.”

Isak made his intentions to leave known over the summer and was excluded from Newcastle’s pre-season activities. He later missed league matches against Aston Villa, Liverpool, and Leeds.

Tensions between the player and the club escalated when Isak released a statement accusing Newcastle of breaking promises to let him go. The club denied any such agreement existed, with manager Eddie Howe publicly stating he wanted to keep Isak.

Just before Newcastle’s recent Premier League match against Liverpool, Isak reportedly met with representatives from the Public Investment Fund and co-owner Jamie Reuben to discuss his future. He once again reiterated his desire to join Liverpool, who had an earlier £110 million bid rejected in August. With the deadline approaching, a deal is now expected to be finalized before the transfer window closes at 7 PM on Monday.
