Alexander Isak is expected to make a surprising U-turn and remain at Newcastle United despite Liverpool’s interest.
Isak’s future has been the focus of heavy transfer speculation, especially after he informed Newcastle he wants to explore his options this summer.
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe recently provided an update on the striker, who did not join the team on their pre-season tour to Asia.
Isak has taken significant steps to push for a move away from St. James’ Park, with Liverpool monitoring his situation ahead of a possible offer.
However, despite his intentions, Isak is predicted to stay at Newcastle for the 2025/26 season.
Keith Wyness, former Everton CEO and current football consultant, believes there is still hope for Newcastle to retain him.
He compared Isak’s situation to that of Morgan Gibbs-White, who appeared set to leave Nottingham Forest for Tottenham but ended up signing a new contract instead.
Wyness said on The Inside Track podcast: “Eddie Howe needs to have a private conversation with him, and the club must rethink his contract situation if they want to resolve this.”
He added that Isak likely likes Newcastle but feels the club hasn’t fulfilled promises made to him, so they need to deliver on a new contract and Howe could convince him to stay.
“It’s tough for clubs to admit they were wrong,” Wyness noted, “but all hope isn’t lost.”
He also recommended that Newcastle offer Isak a new deal to keep him happy.
“If they can secure his signature on a new contract, they already know his market value could reach £150m to £200m,” Wyness said. “So it makes sense to invest in keeping him.”
Wyness admitted he wasn’t sure how far talks have broken down between Isak, his agent, and the club, but hoped the situation was fixable.
He emphasized that having Isak for the upcoming season is crucial if Newcastle want to progress to the next level.
Isak joined Newcastle in summer 2022 from Real Sociedad and has scored 62 goals in 109 appearances for the club.
