Alan Shearer believes Manchester United can pull off an FA Cup upset by defeating Arsenal at the Emirates.
The two giants face off on Sunday in the marquee tie of the FA Cup’s third round. Despite being the defending champions, United are underdogs, with Arsenal widely expected to advance to the fourth round.
The Gunners have won their last four encounters against United, who have failed to secure a victory at the Emirates in their previous seven visits. Arsenal recently defeated Ruben Amorim’s side 2-0, adding to their confidence.
However, United showed signs of improvement last week, earning a hard-fought draw against Liverpool after a string of losses. Shearer believes this renewed spirit could help them topple Arsenal.
Speaking to Betfair, Shearer said: “If Manchester United show the same attitude and performance, I think they can progress. Arsenal have struggled in front of goal lately, missing chances against Newcastle. If United play well, I wouldn’t be surprised if they come away with a win.”
Arsenal, despite being favorites, face added pressure following their midweek Carabao Cup defeat to Newcastle. That loss has left their hopes in the tournament hanging by a thread, increasing the significance of the FA Cup as they aim to end their trophy drought.
Shearer added: “Arsenal need to bounce back, but it’s uncertain what kind of team they’ll field. This game is crucial now. They’re facing challenges in the Carabao Cup and the league, though they’re doing well in the Champions League. Winning the FA Cup might be their best shot at silverware this season.”
Mikel Arteta’s only major trophy as Arsenal manager is the FA Cup, which he won in 2020. Meanwhile, Ruben Amorim, who brought a winning mentality from Sporting Lisbon, will be looking to secure silverware this season to boost morale at Old Trafford and provide hope for the future.
