Alan Shearer dubbed Bukayo Saka a “mentality monster” after the winger’s standout performance in Arsenal’s commanding Champions League quarter-final victory over Real Madrid. Saka scored in the second leg to put Arsenal 4-0 up on aggregate, essentially securing a place in the semi-finals. Although Vinicius Jr later equalized on the night, Gabriel Martinelli sealed a 2-1 win (5-1 on aggregate) with a late goal.
Earlier in the game, Saka had a chance to score from the penalty spot but saw his Panenka-style effort saved by Thibaut Courtois. Despite the miss, the 23-year-old showed impressive composure, rebounding to score in the 65th minute and help push Arsenal through.
On the The Rest Is Football podcast, Shearer, Gary Lineker, and Micah Richards praised Saka’s mental strength. Shearer kicked off the conversation, saying, “What about Saka, man? He’s like a mentality monster.” Lineker, humorously referencing his own famous penalty miss, noted that the daring Panenka could work in Saka’s favor long-term by keeping goalkeepers guessing.
While the audacious attempt could’ve rattled him, Richards admitted initial concern for Saka’s focus after noticing a mis-hit clearance—but the young star quickly bounced back.
Having recently returned from a hamstring injury sustained in late 2024, Saka’s comeback has been vital for Arsenal. Manager Mikel Arteta lauded his performance but joked about wanting to “slap” him for the missed penalty, ultimately applauding Saka’s courage and maturity during his first appearance at the Bernabéu.
