Liverpool are reportedly on the verge of approving a departure for a defender who once impressed former boss Jürgen Klopp.
New manager Arne Slot currently has three senior left-backs at his disposal — Andy Robertson, Kostas Tsimikas, and recent signing Milos Kerkez. With the squad depth in that position, at least one player is expected to see very limited action this season.
Kerkez’s arrival has pushed Owen Beck further down the pecking order, making him the fourth-choice left-back. After returning from a mixed loan spell at Blackburn Rovers, the 22-year-old now appears set for another stint in the Championship.
Owen Beck Poised for Another Loan Move
According to John Percy of The Telegraph, Derby County are close to securing Beck on a season-long loan. The Wales U21 international is expected to undergo a medical in the coming days. Percy noted that Derby boss John Eustace — who worked with Beck at Blackburn — played a key role in the move, as the defender is eager to reunite with him.
Liverpool Making the Right Call with Beck’s Loan
Beck’s absence from Liverpool’s recent friendly against Stoke City and the club’s Asia tour suggests that he’s currently not in Slot’s first-team plans.
That’s not due to a lack of talent — Klopp previously hailed him as a “super talent,” while Dundee’s technical director Gordon Strachan, following Beck’s loan there in 2023, described him as a “great kid with a wonderful personality.”
The full-back enjoyed regular starts under Eustace at Blackburn before the coach moved to Derby in February, so it’s no surprise he’d be keen to link up with him again.
With Beck turning 23 next month, he can’t afford a season of limited opportunities at Anfield. However, the decision to send him out on loan rather than sell him outright indicates that Liverpool still believe in his potential.
Though injuries disrupted the end of his spell at Ewood Park, a move to Derby should give him the chance to play consistently again. Assuming the deal goes through, Beck will have the opportunity to continue his development under a manager who values him — and perhaps still carve out a future at Liverpool.
