Petition Calls for Liverpool’s Potential Premier League Trophy Parade to Be Held in London
A controversial online petition has surfaced, suggesting that if Liverpool wins the Premier League this season, their victory parade should be relocated to London instead of taking place in their home city.
Liverpool moved a step closer to securing their 20th English top-flight title last week, following a 2-0 win over Newcastle United, which extended their lead at the top of the table to 13 points. If they go on to clinch the championship, the club is expected to celebrate with a trophy parade through the streets of Liverpool, as is tradition.
However, ahead of any potential celebrations, an unexpected petition has emerged online, calling for the club to consider hosting the parade in London.
Petition Claims Southern-Based Liverpool Fans Are Overlooked
Following Liverpool’s Carabao Cup and FA Cup triumphs in the 2021/22 season, an estimated 500,000 fans attended the team’s trophy parade in Liverpool. However, one supporter from outside the city argues that repeatedly hosting celebrations there excludes large sections of the club’s fanbase across the UK.
As a result, they launched a petition suggesting that, should Liverpool secure the league title, the parade should be moved to London to accommodate more supporters.
The petition, created on Change.org by a user named King Koppite, states:
“Like many other loyal Liverpool FC fans, I live in London, far from our team’s home city in the North. The South of England and beyond is home to a significant portion of Liverpool’s passionate fanbase, making it costly and time-consuming for us to attend victory parades in Liverpool.”
It continues:
“This is not about disregarding Liverpool’s local heritage but recognizing the club’s national – and even global – reach. Given the large number of Liverpool supporters in the South, moving the parade to London would be a more practical and inclusive approach.”
Supporters and Rival Fans React
The petition also references data from the BBC Radio 5 Live Football Fans Census (2019), which identified London as having the highest concentration of football fans in England. The creator argues that relocating the parade to the capital would allow more supporters to join in the celebrations, fostering a stronger sense of community.
Of course, there is speculation that the petition may have been created by a rival fan as a joke, aiming to mock Liverpool’s success this season. Regardless of its origins, the idea of holding the club’s title parade anywhere other than Liverpool is unlikely to gain serious traction among the club’s local supporters.
