A Liverpool defender may miss the rest of the season after suffering a serious hamstring injury.
Arne Slot has several options at full-back, with Trent Alexander-Arnold, Conor Bradley, Andy Robertson, and Kostas Tsimikas all available for selection. This depth has allowed Liverpool to loan out several young players, many of whom are currently featuring in the EFL.
One of those players is left-back Calum Scanlon, who joined Millwall on loan in August. However, injuries have disrupted his season, limiting him to just one appearance before January.
Under new manager Alex Neil, Scanlon returned to action and scored his first senior goal in a 2-2 draw against Cardiff on January 21. Unfortunately, he had to be substituted after just 17 minutes in the following match against Luton due to another injury.
Following Millwall’s 1-0 victory over Portsmouth on Tuesday, Neil—formerly of Norwich and Preston North End—confirmed that Scanlon had suffered a grade three hamstring injury, likely sidelining him for the remainder of the season.
“Calum’s got a grade three on his hamstring. He will be probably twelve weeks, so maybe a season-finisher for Calum,” Neil stated.
The 19-year-old joined Liverpool from Birmingham in 2021 for around £500,000. He made two Europa League appearances under Jurgen Klopp last season but has yet to debut in the Premier League, despite making the matchday squad twice.
Liverpool reportedly views Scanlon as a potential long-term successor to Andy Robertson, with his loan at Millwall intended to accelerate his development—similar to Conor Bradley’s successful spell at Bolton in 2022/23. However, his latest injury setback could delay those plans.
