Luis Díaz has spoken out about his future at Liverpool shortly after the club rejected an approach from Barcelona.

According to David Ornstein of The Athletic, the Spanish champions submitted an offer for the 28-year-old on Thursday morning, which Liverpool immediately turned down, maintaining their firm stance that the winger is not for sale. Ornstein further noted that despite the efforts of Richard Hughes and Michael Edwards—and The Times’ Paul Joyce reporting that the club isn’t actively looking to sell—there’s been no progress in extending Díaz’s contract, which still has two years left.

Díaz Opens Up About His Future

While on international duty with Colombia, Díaz addressed questions about his club future in a press conference, offering a candid response instead of the typical diplomatic remarks.

Speaking to FCF Media (via journalist Pipe Sierra on X), the Liverpool attacker said: “We’re in talks with other clubs. That’s normal during the transfer window. We’re looking at what’s best for us. If Liverpool offer a good renewal or I stay the two years left on my contract, I’ll be happy. It’s now up to them.”

A Message to Liverpool’s Decision-Makers

Though Díaz may view his agents’ discussions with other clubs as routine business, his comments could unsettle Liverpool fans. His willingness to remain at Anfield is clear, but by stating “it’s up to them,” he seems to be urging the club’s leadership to take the initiative and present a suitable new offer.

Díaz’s remarks come in the context of other senior players like Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk making similar public statements earlier this year, which eventually led to new contracts for both. Díaz may be employing a comparable strategy by publicly discussing his future right after Barcelona’s unsuccessful bid.

The underlying message from Díaz seems to be: “I want to stay, but Liverpool need to show they truly value me.” It’s a bold move, but given the club’s known efforts to renew his contract, it’s also a calculated one.
