Xabi Alonso is said to have made a significant decision at Real Madrid, which could influence Trent Alexander-Arnold’s role at the club.
Last month, following much speculation, it was officially announced that Alonso — a former player for both Liverpool and Real Madrid — would be taking over as the head coach of the Spanish giants.
In a statement on the club’s official website, Alonso expressed his enthusiasm, saying:
“Madridistas, it’s a pleasure to reconnect with you and return to the club. I’ve always felt a strong bond with Madrid, and now that I’m back internally, I’m full of energy and excitement. I hope we can make you proud, enjoy ourselves, and celebrate many successes together. Hala Madrid!”
Alonso already has two new players joining his squad: Dean Huijsen and Trent Alexander-Arnold.
According to a recent report from Spanish outlet MARCA, Alonso has made a key tactical decision ahead of his debut season in charge. Rather than sticking with the 3-4-2-1 formation he favored at Bayer Leverkusen, he is reportedly planning to implement a 4-3-3 setup.
The report stated: “The former Liverpool and Bayern Munich midfielder is considering a transition to a 4-3-3 formation. While it won’t be the team’s only tactical approach, it is expected to serve as the primary structure.”
This shift could benefit Alexander-Arnold, who is already familiar with the 4-3-3 system under Liverpool managers like Jürgen Klopp and Arne Slot. As such, he may find it easier to adapt to his new team without having to adjust to a wing-back role in a 3-4-2-1 formation.
Just last week, Real Madrid officially announced the signing of Alexander-Arnold.
The statement read:
“Real Madrid C. F. and Liverpool FC have reached an agreement for Trent Alexander-Arnold to join our club for the next six seasons, from June 1, 2025, to June 30, 2031.
Alexander-Arnold will participate with Real Madrid in the Club World Cup, taking place in the United States starting June 14.”
