Liverpool confirm significant exit just days after securing Premier League title in official statement

Liverpool have confirmed a significant departure just days after celebrating their Premier League triumph, releasing an official statement regarding the exit.

The club clinched this season’s Premier League title under Arne Slot in his debut campaign, following the departure of Jurgen Klopp. They finished the season 10 points ahead of Arsenal and marked the victory with celebrations on the final matchday, followed by a city-wide parade in Liverpool.

As preparations begin for the next season, Slot will need to find a new assistant coach, as John Heitinga has officially left Anfield to become the head coach of Ajax.

A statement from Liverpool read:
“Liverpool FC can confirm John Heitinga is set to leave the club to take up the position of head coach at Ajax.

The 41-year-old departs after one season as assistant to Arne Slot, contributing to the team’s 2024–25 Premier League title success. He now returns to his homeland to manage his former club, Ajax.

We thank John for his contributions and wish him all the best in his new role.”

Heitinga, a former Premier League player, joined Slot’s coaching staff last summer after previously working at West Ham United under David Moyes. He is now returning to Ajax, where he began his professional career after graduating from their renowned academy.

Having made a name for himself at Ajax before moving to Atlético Madrid, Heitinga later returned to the Dutch club before retiring from playing. He briefly managed Ajax on an interim basis starting in January 2023.

Upon signing a contract through June 2027, Heitinga stated:
“I’m thrilled to begin this new chapter. My time in England has been hugely beneficial. I’ve grown a lot under the guidance of David Moyes and Arne Slot and gained valuable experience at two major clubs. I now feel ready to lead as a head coach and am honored to have that chance at Ajax.”
