Trent Alexander-Arnold’s transfer to Real Madrid has been officially confirmed, as new details surface about the special agreement Liverpool has reached with the Spanish powerhouse.
The move had long been anticipated, and earlier this month Alexander-Arnold announced he would leave Liverpool once his contract concluded. Following an emotional farewell during last week’s Premier League trophy lift, The Athletic reports that he will now join forces with England teammate Jude Bellingham at Real Madrid, signing a six-year contract.
As is typical for Spanish clubs, the deal will include a significant release clause, according to Fabrizio Romano.
Although Alexander-Arnold was initially set to depart on a free transfer, Real Madrid will pay Liverpool a one-time fee of £8.4 million to secure the move early. This allows the defender to participate in the revamped Club World Cup, scheduled to begin in the U.S. this June.
With the early transfer agreement, Liverpool avoids paying his remaining salary and any outstanding bonuses. The deal was finalized on the same day as Liverpool’s title parade and will become official on June 1.
Over the course of his career with Liverpool, Alexander-Arnold made 354 appearances, scored 23 goals, and provided 92 assists, helping the club win eight major trophies. In a statement, Liverpool expressed their “appreciation and gratitude” for his immense contribution during a highly successful era.
Alexander-Arnold is expected to make his Real Madrid debut against Al Hilal on June 18, with additional Club World Cup matches lined up against Pachuca and Red Bull Salzburg.
