Fans are convinced that Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah took a subtle jab at Manchester United following their 1-0 defeat to the ASEAN All-Stars in Malaysia.
Ruben Amorim’s squad traveled to Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday as part of their post-season tour across Asia, facing a team composed mostly of Southeast Asian players, including representatives from South Korea, Vietnam, Cambodia, the Philippines, Malaysia, and Australia. Malaysian international Sergio Aguero captained the side.
Amorim rotated his lineup, using a different eleven for each half, but United conceded a goal midway through the second half.
After losing the Europa League final just a week earlier, this loss—though less significant—gave rival fans more ammunition to mock the club. Many believe Salah joined in with a perfectly timed social media post.
Mere minutes after the final whistle in Kuala Lumpur, Salah shared two photos of himself with the Premier League trophy at Anfield, sparking speculation that it was a calculated dig at United.
One fan tweeted, “Strategically posting this five minutes after United lose to ‘ASEAN All-Stars.’ What a way to cap a generational season. Love you.”
Another added, “Nobody despises United more than Mo Salah,” while a third wrote, “He’s the ultimate hater of this generation.”
Following their stop in Malaysia, United will head to Hong Kong to play the national team before returning home. They missed out on the Maybank Cup in Kuala Lumpur, though it’s unlikely to weigh heavily on them.
However, the display may have highlighted for Amorim the areas where the team needs reinforcements.
After Sunday’s 2-0 Premier League win over Aston Villa, the United manager said: “I’m thrilled to wrap up the season and eager to get started again. We can’t waste time—we need to prepare for the pre-season properly. Looking ahead, with the World Cup coming up, we won’t get many chances for a full pre-season, so we have to make key changes to the squad and act fast.”
