Merseyside Police have issued a fresh statement regarding the incident that occurred during Liverpool’s Premier League title celebration.
On Monday, Liverpool’s players and staff marked their Premier League victory with a city-wide open-top bus parade, celebrating alongside thousands of supporters.
The celebrations were overshadowed, however, by a serious event on Water Street in the city centre.
Around 6pm, a video circulated on social media showing a vehicle driving through a crowd on Water Street, hitting several individuals.
Merseyside Police later confirmed the arrest of a 53-year-old white British man in connection with the incident.
David Kitchin from North West Ambulance Service stated that 20 people received treatment at the scene, while 27 were taken to hospital—two of whom sustained serious injuries.
An updated statement was released on Thursday afternoon.
According to The Echo, police have been granted additional time to question the man in custody. Authorities now report that 79 people were injured overall, with seven still hospitalized but in stable condition.
Detective Superintendent Rachel Wilson shared that the number of people in hospital is gradually decreasing as recovery continues. She emphasized that the police are continuing to support those still receiving care and are identifying additional victims as the investigation progresses.
She assured the Merseyside community that detectives are making solid progress in uncovering the full sequence of events.
Wilson also noted that officers are reviewing extensive CCTV footage to trace the movements of the Ford Galaxy vehicle prior to the incident.
She expressed gratitude for the cooperation shown by the public and urged anyone who hasn’t yet come forward with information to do so.
The investigation remains active, and police continue to advise against speculation or sharing of distressing footage related to the event.
