A comedian has faced backlash and seen his shows cancelled following a controversial post he made about a disturbing incident during Liverpool’s recent victory parade.
On Monday, Liverpool supporters filled the city streets to celebrate their team’s Premier League triumph, with players and staff showcasing the trophy atop an open-top bus.
The event was particularly significant as fans had previously missed out on celebrating the club’s last title win due to COVID-19 restrictions. The turnout was enormous, reflecting the passion of the Reds’ fanbase.
However, the day took a tragic turn around 6 p.m. when a serious incident occurred.
Videos quickly spread on social media showing a car driving through a crowd on Water Street in the city centre, hitting several people.
Merseyside Police later confirmed the arrest of a 53-year-old white British man in connection with the incident.
On Tuesday, comedian Andrew Lawrence faced widespread condemnation online for posting an offensive tweet about the tragic event.
Following the backlash, it was announced that his scheduled performance at Caddies Southend had been cancelled.
A fan shared an email from Caddies that read: “We have been informed by the organisers of the Andrew Lawrence comedy night that the event has been cancelled. We do not support or endorse the comment made online, and we extend our thoughts and prayers to everyone affected by the events in Liverpool. As a small independent business, we are unable to respond to all individual inquiries. The event organiser will contact ticket holders soon regarding refunds.”
At a press conference on Monday night, Assistant Chief Constable Jenny Sims of Merseyside Police stated: “Today had been a joyful occasion in Liverpool, with hundreds of thousands lining the streets for the club’s victory parade. Tragically, just after 6 p.m., we received reports of a vehicle colliding with pedestrians on Water Street. Several people sustained injuries and were taken to hospital.”
David Kitchin of the North West Ambulance Service added that 20 individuals were treated at the scene, while 27 were transported to hospital, including two with serious injuries.
