A man who was mistakenly identified as the driver involved in an incident that injured Liverpool fans on Monday has made an urgent appeal to the police.
Liverpool’s city centre was packed with fans celebrating the club’s Premier League title parade that day. However, the festive atmosphere shifted dramatically around 6 p.m. when reports of a serious incident surfaced.
A video shared on social media showed a car driving through Water Street, hitting several fans gathered in the area.
Merseyside Police later confirmed the arrest of a 53-year-old white British man in connection with the incident.
The BBC reported that another man had been falsely named on social media as the driver. He has since urged the police to publicly identify the actual suspect to clear his name.
Peter Cunningham, a 54-year-old from Huyton, told the BBC via FaceTime: “It’s not me. I’m at work – the police need to release the name because I’m being blamed.”
He added: “Family and friends keep calling me, but this could escalate. The police have to take action.”
Merseyside Police have asked the public to avoid making assumptions, noting that suspects’ names are typically withheld until formal charges are filed.
A police spokesperson told the BBC: “We have arrested a 53-year-old man from West Derby. He is still in custody and being questioned.”
At a press briefing on Monday night, David Kitchin of North West Ambulance Service said: “Our teams treated 20 people at the scene for minor injuries that did not require hospitalization. A total of 27 individuals were taken to the hospital, and we believe two of them – including one child – sustained serious injuries.”
