Former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp has broken his silence regarding the tragic incident that overshadowed the club’s Premier League title parade.
Thousands of Liverpool fans had gathered along the streets to celebrate the team’s 20th league title. However, the joyous occasion turned tragic around 6 p.m. when a serious incident occurred in the city centre.
Videos widely shared on social media showed a car ploughing through crowds on Water Street, injuring several supporters.
Police later released a statement confirming they responded to reports of a collision involving multiple pedestrians. The driver remained at the scene and was detained. Merseyside Police identified the suspect as a 53-year-old white British man.
Twenty individuals received treatment on site, and 27 were transported to hospital. Two of them sustained serious injuries.
Among the injured was Jack Trotter, who spoke from hospital about the pain he experienced after being struck while walking with his girlfriend, Abbie Gallagher.
In response, Klopp shared a heartfelt message online: “My family and I are shocked and devastated. Our thoughts and prayers are with those who are injured and affected.”
Liverpool City Council leader Liam Robinson urged the public not to share distressing footage of the incident, asking instead that any relevant information be passed on to police to support their investigation. He emphasized the city’s unity in tough times and expressed his support for the victims and their families.
